Alpspitze Klettersteig (ferrata) Standard route.

Easy 5th Easy Snow, Snow, Alpine, 2000 ft (606 m), Grade III,  Avg: 2.5 from 6 votes
FA: vermutlich J. Burger aus Partenkirchen, 1825
International > Europe > Germany > Oberbayern > Alpine > Alpspitze

Description

From the top of the Alpspitzbahn (Osterfelderkopf), follow the signs to the right toward the Alpspits ferrata. Once you see the initial ladder, and clip into the klettersteig, you can put your map away for the day (remember to look around though, the scenery is stellar). Once on top, look toward Garmisch, the trail down goes to the right. Takes about four to five hours to complete the circuit. Start early.

Outstanding views of the Waxsteinen, the Zugspitze, and the Wetterstein range.

WARNING: If there is a chance of lightning, forget about it. You will be clipped into a steel cable that runs to the top of a prominent peak. Lightning is a major cause of tourist death in the Alps, if you hear blitzen (lightning), get off the mountain pronto.

Location

The klettersteig starts from the trail just southwest of the Osterfelderkopf (toward the mountain).

Protection

Klettersteig (via ferrata) and harness, This route could be done with one runner and biner for the alpinist in a hurry, but ethics call for helmets, this is the Mount FUJI of Germany and the foot traffic yields many loose rocks, cameras, 2L fanta, etc

Goretex, Vibram boots, Sun-screen and glasses, 1-2L water, 1-2lbs food.

[Hide Comment] Is the suggestion to save weight on the via ferrata by using a runner and carabiner in the place of a via ferrate set?

That is a terrible idea and in the event of fall will mean serious injury or death. The via ferrata set is designed to absorb the energy of fall (like a climbing rope) because the cables are static.

There are lightweight versions of via ferrata gear available. Jun 26, 2018

[Hide Comment] Climbed the Alpspitze Ferrata, descended via the "recommended" Ostgrat and Nordwandsteig descent route. On July 4 the route was free of snow, a few small patches still in close proximity. Quality beta and more detailed maps are available on the German web site bergsteigen.com. I would note that there is some information on other web sites that led me (and others who were climbing that day) to think this was a fairly easy route. Don't underestimate it based on the grade, time on the route including the descent for me was something like 5-6 hours and the descent was somewhat tricky, route finding and 3rd-4th class down climbing and loose rock in places. It's a solid day in the mountains so start early and don't miss the last tram ride down. Wouldn't recommend this if the weather is questionable, the rock is polished and very slippery if wet (also the iron ladder rungs can get slippery) and you'll want some good visibility to stay on course for the descent. It was easy to follow the fixed cables and ladders going up, but the descent had a lot fewer fixed cables so it's more like an alpine style down scramble, some red painted dots and cairns will help you to stay on track. I'd also recommend some sort of navigation app (I used GAIA gps with a pre-loaded map to help stay on course on the way down). I found an iPhone light to be sufficient for the "long tunnel" which is in fact completely dark, but doesn't take all that long to get through if you don't have a headlamp. The comment above about using a "single runner and 'biner for alpinists in a hurry" is misleading, maybe it was meant as more of a "this is a possible way" to travel for alpinists in distress, have no other gear, etc. Many forums on the topic about the very bad things which happen with falls onto static slings. Just get yourself a proper Via Ferrata setup, it's is exactly what this type of gear was meant for! Overall a really awesome route, highly recommend it Jul 12, 2023
