Poplar Crack

5.7, Trad, TR, 40 ft (12 m),  Avg: 2.6 from 51 votes

N Carolina > 2. Northern Mou… > Holloway Mountain

Description

A great beginner climb. Some really fun moves. The crux comes about halfway up, could lie back to complete.

Location

Right side of the main wall. The crack behind the large tulip poplar tree.

Protection

If top-roping must use natural anchors. Beware, many people in the past rigged with the 3-4 small/medium trees at the top of the climb, but some have since died. The crack starts off about fist-width and gets gradually smaller. Cams and nuts should do the trick, and a brown tri-cam is key for when you have to transition from the left side to the right side of the crack.

[Hide Comment] The quality of rock and routes at Holloway are quite good. Gear placements in Poplar Crack are also very good... both frequent and high quality. Would make for an ideal introduction to trad leading.

NOTE: If you are topping this out and building anchors at top to bring a 2nd up, then this is not a 40' climb. Perhaps more like 60' which is no big deal except that you should take a few more draws than 40' would imply. Jul 14, 2014

[Hide Comment] This is actually a really nice route for such a small wall. I probably wouldn't make a trip specifically to climb here but if you are in the neighborhood and want a quick fix, it should do the trick. The pro is good and the route is just steep enough to be interesting. Don't expect much of a fist crack though, maybe a 1.5' section down low. Expect crowds on the weekend. Jul 20, 2014
