Frigga

5.7+, TR, 40 ft (12 m),  Avg: 2.1 from 55 votes
FA: unknown -- probably Stewart Green and/or Brian Shelton
Colorado > Colorado Springs > Red Rock Canyon… > Solar Slab
Warning Access Issue: Reopened after flood damage! DetailsDrop down

Description

This is the top-rope route immediately right of El Sol.

The bottom one-third is almost pure friction climbing on some pretty slick sandstone. It is listed in Stewart Green's Red Rock guidebook as 5.7, but I thought the bottom third of Frigga was definitely tougher than anything on Helios (5.7+) which is two routes left. It is worth a climb after doing El Sol.

Location

This line goes to the farthest right anchors on Solar Slab.

Climb El Sol, then once on top traverse right 15 feet from El Sol anchors to set the top-rope on the two Frigga anchors.

I recommend buying Stewart Green's Red Rocks Guidebook at Garden of the God's visitor's center for complete Red Rocks route descriptions/locations.

Protection

There is a 2-bolt anchor at top but no protection beneath.

Per Stewart M. Green: there no bolts on this route. There never has been any lead bolts on it.

[Hide Comment] If climbed straight up, crux move near bottom probably goes at least 5.8. Green's guidebook shows this route in the sketch but describes the start as for El Sol before veering right, which may explain his 5.7 rating. Mar 31, 2011
[Hide Comment] This is bolted now. 4 to be exact. Jun 25, 2016
[Hide Comment] There are no bolts on this route. It was never bolted nor were bolts added. Tim might need new glasses!

It's important to remember that bolts cannot be added to existing routes or new routes established without the permission of the Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department. Climbing at Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Garden of the Gods is a managed process.

If you wish to modify a route, contact the Pikes Peak Climber's Alliance through its website pikespeakclimbersalliance.org/ to fill out the paperwork required by both the PPCA and the City of Colorado Springs, which can then be submitted to the Parks Department. Jul 11, 2016

[Hide Comment] Direct start is very cool. There is a totally blank section of smearing for about 6 ft at the start that would make for a sketchy lead. Probably a really smart idea this stays TR only, as it reduces the amount of traffic it gets. If this got as much traffic as El Sol or Helios, the smearing section would get bald really quick and make this closer to 5.10-5.10+ territory.

As of March 2020, this route feels like a 5.8 with the crux section around 5.8+, the last 3/4ths of the climb is 5.5 territory, not as powerful or interesting as the Solar Flare and harder than Helios by a fair bit. Needs a good clean though. Many holds up top fall apart under any weight. Mar 12, 2020

[Hide Comment] Set this route up as a toprope for my 5 year old. There is a natural ramp to the right of this climb that can be used to access the top - not too nerve-racking, but the last few feet is a little sketchy. Good route for young climbers just starting out. My son loved it and gradually got higher and higher until he finally made it to the top. Mar 20, 2021
