The Ledge

5.5, Sport, TR, 25 ft (8 m),  Avg: 1.5 from 64 votes
FA: Darren Knezek
Utah > Wasatch Range > Southern Wasatch > Rock Canyon > Appendage

Description

An agreeable jaunt up the west side of The Appendage on the short faces between several narrow ledges.

This line is good for beginning leaders; the three bolts protect the harder bits well and the climbing is straightforward but rewarding.

Location

The left-most, bolted line on The Appendage proper; starts just east of the trees that are west of the formation.

(There is another 3-bolt route (Butterface) which is a bit uphill on the next slabby faceĀ—it should be obvious that it is harder than 5.4.)

Protection

3 bolts, chain anchors. The chains are reachable via an easy scramble to the left.

[Hide Comment] Nothing super fantastic here, but it's entertaining climbing and the rock is solid. The first couple times I climbed this route, the third bolt was missing. It's back now. Aug 11, 2008

[Hide Comment] Pretty fun little climb. Maybe I'm a wuss, but 5.6 seems a fairer rating to me. Maybe not. Mar 28, 2009

[Hide Comment] I think some parts broke off. I climbed it two years ago and it was a solid < 5.5. Now it seems like some hands and feet are missing. There are obvious scars. Apr 19, 2011

[Hide Comment] Agreed it should be a 5.6, still a fun climb with easy bulges. Apr 11, 2015

[Hide Comment] Yeah, the route gets a little tougher as you go up, I'd say climbing up to the first ledge (and bolt) is 5.4, up to the second ledge is 5.5, then getting over the top is probably 5.6 and the holds there aren't super obvious. Jul 15, 2017
