Description

The extended start to Ride the Lightning. Squat/sit start with two holds in the crack and a good right foot. Make a big move left to grab a sloper, drop right hand into the left start hold, then work your feet left. Match the sloper (crux) and move to a jug or an undercling before grabbing the holds of RTL. Finish on RTL.

The moves can be fun, unfortunately, the problem is wet most of the time. It is rare to find it in climbable condition.

Location

From Ride the Lightning, move right about 10 feet. The start of this problem is in the grove of trees.

Before getting on this I always thought this was kinda weird, RTL is so awesome why does it need an extra start? And if so I figured it wouldn't be too bad difficulty-wise. Boy was I wrong, the movement into RTL is actually awesome and physically harder than anything on the lightning, and it tires you out pretty good for the mantle. Definitely worthwhile. May 24, 2015

I wanted to add that most people do an incorrect start to this problem, which is why many people feel it is easy for the grade. Most people start on the flat jug/sloper to the left of the first tree (as shown in the photo above). This line is actually meant to start to the left of the next tree over (the tree that is next to the start of 'Brett's Mom'). The crux is these beginning moves as they're pretty burly.

By starting further left, you miss the crux altogether and instead only add a few v3/4-ish moves into 'Ride The Lightning', which makes it seem only slightly harder (if at all) than the original 'RTL' start. Nov 10, 2015
Recently the juggy undercling used in the section used to reach Ride the Lightning has broken. My friend Keith Nadeau did it since the break saying it's now a solid v8(he and many others thought this was soft before the breakage). Nonetheless this is a good line worth doing after sending Ride the Lightning. Everyone who hasn't done it since March, go do it again with new beta! Jul 7, 2016

If you are still wondering where this starts there is footage of this climb starting at 2:27. I know I have started this wrong before so I figured I may as well show this video to end the controversy. youtube.com/watch?v=gZDYL2i… Sep 20, 2016
