Fat Sister

WI3+, Ice, 140 ft (42 m),  Avg: 4 from 5 votes
FA: unknown
Wyoming > Shell Canyon > Post Creek

Description

The most obvious fat flow on the cliffband. It starts out with a steep curtain, rolling over onto steep slab which gets easier the higher you go. A classic single pitch climb for its grade! Be careful, the topouts to this and the other sisters can often be thin with running water behind the ice; best done after a decent cold spell.

Location

Rap the route with two ropes.

Protection

Screws. Bush belay on top.

Bridger rapping the Fat Sister in 12/09...it was in the best shape I'd seen it. The anchor is in good shape too, with several sturdy slung shrubs and a small tree with good webbing and several lockers.

[Hide Comment] Really great route! Steep lower section to a lower angle WI2 slab that continues for what seems like days. Very aesthetic. As of (12/16/20) the lower willow anchor has good tat and a large quick link. We used this, although there is a better looking anchor about 20’ up and right on a larger looking tree. Dec 17, 2020

[Hide Comment] Based on my experience on this route in the past few years - there is something interesting about the flow volume and temps on this one. When it’s cold out (~15f high) the ice locks up and is very brittle and fairly poor climbing but when it’s just a bit warmer (~20-25f) the water really picks up and the lower flow tends to delaminate and can be a bit hairy.
