Description

Climb the west side of the tower, follow nail heads using tie-offs. One or two nails were a bit difficult to place as the leader, after about three placements, managed to hit his fingers full force with the hammer which for a while resulted in much pain and blood. However, the situation soon made that inconvenience irrelevant. Quite solid shale. There are good anchors on the summit block.

Note I once tried to approach the tower from the bottom but it is very steep shale and may only be possible with crampons etc

Location

To reach this tower hike up the Mt. Garfield trail to above the middle cliff section. Then hike above this until one arrives above the tower. Scramble down a ridge to rap anchors. The approach takes about one hour.

Protection

Follow nails, tie offs, etc.

To SW. I may be wrong on this but I grade C1 when following ascents do not need to hammer anything into the rock (shale) as with this route all nails are already in place. May 21, 2008

Um - not to nitpick, but if you're hammering in iron, shouldn't your rating (C1) reflect it. Say, A1 or A2? Apr 17, 2008

They are about 8"x 3/8". Hardware stores call them spikes. Jan 15, 2008

When you say "nails," do you literally mean nails used for construction pounded into the shale? Sounds like fun! Would love to check that out.... I think. Jan 3, 2008
