Chimp

5.10b, Sport, 60 ft (18 m),  Avg: 2.5 from 190 votes
FA: John & Tina Bronaugh, 12/'92
Kentucky > Red River Gorge > Natural Bridge… > Zoo > Old Zoo

Description

Another good route on the smoother side of the wall, but has a few steep moves on a roof and bulges. As such, it is a mix of crimps and larger holds, still with a balance of crimps. Pocket fans can skip this one as well.
If "Put Me In the Zoo (9+)" is occupied, the might be the best warm up for you.

Location

Since the addition of the Route "Jailbird" this is now the 4th line from the right, and the 3rd sport route overall. It may be most easily distinguished by being a bolted line between 2 left-leaning cracks that begin a few body-lengths above the ground before climbing up a bulge above them.

Protection

6 bolts to a 2-bolt anchor.

[Hide Comment] This route is low angle, wouldn't really call it near vertical. If you're used to climbing the steep juggy routes in Muir Valley, or indoor climbing, the tiny holds on this route might freak you out a little bit. But the holds are also very positive, and once you get your head in the game and trust your feet, it will be very fun. May 10, 2015

[Hide Comment] Up to the first bolt is a little heady, but the holds are pretty good. After that the climbing mellows and gets fun toward the top. Dec 2, 2017

[Hide Comment] Old school at 10a in the book. Thin, balancey. If you’re short, getting to the first bolt might feel spicy at the grade. I found this to be quite a wake up for first route of the day and definitely not worth warming up on if you’re climbing the routes on the main wall. Nov 10, 2024

[Hide Comment] Mixed metals- stainless bolts and non-stainless links on the anchors have caused some serious corrosion on this one. Might be worth swapping these out if you’re planning on climbing this anytime soon. Nov 12, 2024
