Location

First route right of the bolt protected start of Up in Smoke.

[Hide Comment] This is a fun little climb, with a bit of pump, and several tricky moves up higher.

As noted the description this is a pretty serious endeavor as sport climb if you max out at 5.10a The first bolt is quite high, and a little tricky to clip. Blowing the second clip, which although easy, would result very unpleasant auger into the earths surface at high speeds, culminating with an evacuation and lots of hospital bills. Nov 17, 2010

[Hide Comment] The spacey bolting noted by others was the result of the FA party purposely not bolting near the then-existing trad line of Up in Smoke — an admirable concession in my view. In any event, two bolts have been added to Thing One making it almost gym-bolted and a bit more direct, producing what may be the best of the 5.10s on Obscure Rock. BTW, both the Up in Smoke and Thing One original ascencionists were fine with adding the new bolts. Also, the first route right of Mask of the Red Death is Up In Smoke (with the new start—see that route’s post), and we didn’t find any exfoliation caused by fire. Dec 8, 2022
