Mr. Breeze

Colorado > San Luis Valley > Penitente Canyon > Penitente - Entrance…

Description

Just to the right of Captain America are 4 slab routes. If you need a warm up below 5.10, this area is where you should be. Mr. Breeze is (by far) the easiest of these routes. If you're in a party of 3, this is a great way to keep yourself occupied while others climb / belay. It is very fun as well. This is pretty obvious once you are there.

Protection

Chalk bag / 5 (4?) bolts.

[Hide Comment] This was my first ever outdoor lead. Even at that stage it was almost too easy to mess with. However, if you have someone in your party who has never led before, this route is a great way to get them started. Mar 6, 2002
[Hide Comment] This route can be third classed with a running start. It is actually pretty fun. Aug 6, 2003

[Hide Comment] This seems like a great route to get the kids on, but beware. I watched 5 kids - including my own 8 year old - easily climb up, but have horrible problems coming down. I would guess that the combination of low angle, and the high tie-in point of the the kids body harness, prevents them from getting their weight fully on the rope. They don't feel comfortable leaning right back, and as a result end up reversing the route. May 28, 2007

[Hide Comment] Made it to Penitente for the first time just two weeks ago...it won't be the last trip. I soloed Mr. Breeze a few times in my approach shoes and decided it'd be a great first lead for my 4-1/2 year old, who is cleaning up to 5.7 and taking just a few times on certain climbs up to 5.9 (all on TR of course). While he was climbing, I climbed up next to him, making sure he clipped the draws properly, then near the top, I snapped a photo from above. No, I don't plan on letting him lead anything harder until he gets older, but this was just too easy to pass up! The whole while he was telling me how he was going to be my ropegun. Sweeeeet. [Hide Comment] My almost 3 y.o. topped out on this without us climbing up with her. This is a great area for tiny climbers. May 11, 2025

[Hide Comment] Makes for a fun romp of a scramble if you're hanging out in the canyon or waiting on a climb :) Also a killer first lead! May 29, 2025
