Climbers Partner with LDS Church on Stewardship of Little Cottonwood Canyon Climbing
June 1st, 2017:The Salt Lake Climbers Alliance (SLCA), the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and Access Fund announce the signing of an unprecedented lease for 140 acres in Little Cottonwood Canyon (LCC). The parcel, known as the Gate Buttress, is about one mile up LCC canyon and has been popular with generations of climbers because of its world-class granite.
The agreement secures legitimate access to approximately 588 routes and 138 boulder problems at the Gate Buttress for rock climbers, who will be active stewards of the property. The recreational lease is the result of several years of negotiations between LDS Church leaders and the local climbing community.
Access Note: The climbs on the Church Buttress above the vault as well as the Glen boulders that have been traditionally closed will remain closed.
Please help us steward this area and leave no trace.

Description
On the far west side of Egg is a bolt line ascending the mottled, scrambled egg looking face. The crux is right off the 1st bolt, and is quite short. The rest of the climb max's out at 5.8 and is just plain fun slab climbing. It even has a nice LCC runout midway up! Follow the bolt line as it flows up through cups and edges to the 8th bolt. Here, shuffle right and belay at the "Variety Delight" belay in among the trees. To continue to the top of the formation probably taxes a 60m rope, but having never continued on, I couldn't tell you. Don't hike to the Egg without doing this route.
Protection
8 quickdraws to chains, or scamper right to the belay station for "Variety Delight" after the 8th bolt. If you continue on to the very top of the formation, you'll need some medium sized nuts and cams.
A 70m rope from Lego my eggo chains will leave you about 15 feet from the belay.

Thanks to whoever put the chains in at the top. I'm not sure what someone was talking about with the cams/nuts between the top bolt and the chains. If you can get something into that groove it surely would only function as psychological protection. Nov 4, 2010

Other than that, awesome climb!

We read the comments about the 70m rope and down climb but I definitely seemed like more than 10 feet, we didn't feel it was safe after lowering and bailed off the last bolt. I don't recommend messing around with that, but when I went back up I noticed there is another set of chains around half way up on the climbers left that you could use to double rap. Jun 3, 2024

Linking with the final 5.7 OW of Variety Delight via a second short pitch is fluent and recommended. Toss a long sling on the anchor for Leggo and paddle right to the anchor for VD. You can trail a tagline to the first pitch anchor for VD, then climb the second pitch of VD and rappel back to the anchor with a single 60, then use both ropes to return to terra firma.
So fun! Nov 5, 2024
