Description

Birthday Chimney sits in the corner between Birthday Crack (route 9) and Caesarian West Face (route 11). The route isn't really climbed as an offwidth chimney. Climb this route using face holds and ledges on the wall to your left and the tower to your right. Step up on ledges with your feet, using an occasional stem between the face and the tower. For novice leaders there are plenty of nice resting spots, making this a good route to try out the sharp end.

[Hide Comment] It can be climbed as a true chimney, however, it gets really thin about half way up. Unless you are really skinny (which I am not) you will only be able to get about half of your body into the chimney. I, myself, only manage a leg and an arm and that, in itself, is hard to manipulate when "jammed" inside. Fun little route. May 5, 2002

[Hide Comment] I am fairly skinny and could not do the route in the chimney. The bottom half is just too thin: the upper half is fine. The left/north face has good holds and edges outside of the chimney proper. Aug 21, 2006

[Hide Comment] This is a great beginner or warm up route! If you're skinny, the first part of the chimney works well, but move to the left or you'll get stuck. Either way, great stemming, smearing, and holds to get you up quick! Oct 31, 2013

[Hide Comment] Am I missing something on this route? I thought it was hard to protect the middle and had a big runout with deck potential. The protection lists "SR" and luckily I brought a #4 and #5 to fit in the chimney for protection but still, didn't feel comfortable. Aug 8, 2023
