Access Issue: Climbing Regulations/Seasonal Raptor Closures Details Details

The Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent's Compendium states that:
1. Vegetation is not allowed to be used as an anchor.
2. Only neutral or rock-colored bolt hangers are allowed. A permit is required to replace or add new bolts: nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/…

Seasonal Closures:
The presence of a nesting owl in very close proximity to a variety of climbing routes, "Right On," "Orange Flake," "Kid Caligula," requires closure until the nest has been abandoned to ensure the protection of the species for the duration of the nesting activities. This closure will be in effect from February 17, 2026 until June 7, 2026; or until the nest has been abandoned.

The presence of a prairie falcon nesting in very close proximity to a variety of climbing routes requires closure of "Fat Freddie’s Cat,” “Freak Brothers Dome,” “The Weenie,” “Pea Brain,” and “The Red Obelisk." This closure will be in effect from February 17, 2026 until June 7, 2026; or until the nest has been abandoned

Description

Scramble up blocks to the base of this climb which starts above a deep chasm.

Clip a bolt then make a tough move and proceed upward past another bolt which leads into a shallow crack/seam with somewhat scarce protection. The crack/seam dies out and somewhat exciting moves lead to a final bolt and the top.

The belay on top is somewhat difficult to arrange, and it's best to go WAY back and down the backside to a corner system.

Easy walk off exists to the climber's right.

Location

Located on the rightmost section of The Wall. This is on the same face as Chalk Up Another One but 50 feet left of the chimney (Damn Jam) that splits the face into two halves.

Protection

3 bolts (1/2 inch SS)

Gear to 2.5 inches, including a #7 Hexentric

The runout to the last bolt is real. The follower is already above the last piece of natural gear in this photo. A great and exciting route.

There's a great slot for a medium-sized hex (#7) on this route before the final bolt. Oct 1, 2014

This is a really sweet route hiding in plain sight. I was happy to see all the old bolts have been replaced with modern 1/2”. In terms of aesthetics and climbing style variety, this is a superior line to Chalk Up and Pumping Ego, following a seductive and ever thinning seam - a pure and natural trad line. I found more gear than expected, but the runout to the last bolt is very serious. Best be used to Joshua Tree friction… and stoked on that kind of thing… I am.

The anchor up top is very limited, you’ll need two #1’s and a #2, or belay over the back of the formation.

I cleaned up a lot of graininess over the course of my long lead, but there’s still some crystals to be shed. Nothing egregious, but maybe have some margin…

Recommended to anchor the belayer to the very low first bolt.
