When I first started climbing in 1989, Mike became a friend and climbing partner for few months...
He was super positive and helpful and a total riot to hang out with, esp. when he started doing voices.
And everyone knew him..
We used to go to Stony Point every Tuesday and Thursday (and on occasion Malibu Creek to try some routs he put up) and then to JT, Tahquitz and Suicide Rocks every weekend together.
We went to Yosemite and did the second ascent of Astro Turf.
Then he took me up Sacher Cracker..
It's rare that I think about climbing and not think about the Gargoyle
It would be great to find him again. Apr 8, 2017
The cranky sequence of power moves to this point tax the fingers and drain power, power that is needed to pull the final series of slopers that await as you turn the lip from overhang to slab. Mike was tall, 6'4", and he had a big Ape Index, +5", and this came to his advantage on this route in particular, because he was able to skip funky intermediate holds by long reaches to better edges. That long reach enabled him to ratchet smoothly over the bulge he is has just encountered in this shot. Guardino was not only a gifted climber...he was also one of the funniest people you'd ever meet, and groups of climbers would close ranks around him just to share in the funny. Jul 14, 2015
