In the 1962 guide book, Chuck Wilts notes that the crack "deteriorates near the top", and then goes on to advise any would be leader to place a high piton and "lower down to a ledge to rest before attempting the top moves"...and the route was given a 5.10+ was one of only nine 5.10 routes in the entire guide, receiving its FA in '61 by Royal Robbins, Harry Daley, and J. Taylor. There is little doubt that the SLCD combined with sticky rubber have taken a lot of the wind out of the lead so feared by the early climbers of this route.
FYI: Dr. Wilts -of Cal Tech- was part of a team who discovered information storage on magnetic tape...think of where that went: Got 8-Track? Mar 26, 2015
