The New Mexico Climber was a climbing newsletter that ran intermittently through the late 1970s. Its goal was to record the many routes going up at the time. While George Bell tracked activity in the Brazos, Mike Hill compiled beta for the Sandias and Dick Ingraham kept an informal log for the Organs there were still no published guidebooks for these areas. It is amusing to remember how much effort went into each edition of The Climber. Thankfully there was never any lack of contributors but their work had to be typewritten, the photographs made into lithographs and affixed manually to pages that were then copied and stapled in the basement of Zimmerman Library. Half were then sold over the counter at a quarter apiece in the Wilderness Centre and the rest distributed between Los Alamos and NMSU. Of six total editions copies were found of all save the last, Spring 1979. Many features of The New Mexico Climber may seem quaint today, yet some things never go out of style such as respect for the climbing that has gone before.
