Our plane just after landing in Rarotonga...this "international" airport only has one runway and can only handle one plane at a time
This is called The Needle, the only bare (non-lush) rock near the top of the island of Rarotonga...it has an approach of about 2.5 hours through rocky, mountainous, jungle-like terrain..if only we had had room for the gear on the flight...there's a little sign bolted to the base telling you the 'Trail ends here" and to go any farther is to do so at you own risk...there is a chain bolted via ferrata style leading halfway around the base to where there is a length of rope made of at least 30 little pieces of rope to get to the very top ( I was severely advised by a few natives not to trust the rope)
