As a guide for many years, I have to say that regardless of "getting away with it last time," it would be far safer to position the belayer closer to the base of the climb and in-line with the first piece of gear. Half the battle in staying as safe as possible while climbing is minimizing the variables: remove as many potential bad things from the system/situation as you can, and then you can concentrate on the good stuff!
