The reason for calling this technique "the Gondola" is that their reward for demonstrating perfect lowering technique on the top half of the route was to sit back and "ride" down the second half. <br> <br> When they were little, they enjoyed this even more than the actual climbing!
The most effective way to teach the boys to lower properly was to use a technique that the boys came to affectionately call "the Gondola." To do this, I first counter ascend up, clip myself to the tie-in knot using a PAS, and then lower together.

This is the setup that I routinely use when I have built a top-rope anchor that is extended some distance over an edge and I need to rappel that route. I, in effect, rappel a separate strand of rope (using the munter) to get to the extended masterpoint. I pre-rig the rappel on the actual climbing rope, before I begin descending with the munter.
