This is the first of a series of self portraits that I made one evening at Point Mugu. I had not brought along a tripod, so the only way to capture the fantastic colors was to prop my camera on a bundled-up sweater, on the ground.<br> <br> The cool pickup is not mine.

My all-time favorite sunset shot from Point Mugu. Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands are both visible.
A local climber from Thousand Oaks climbs the 5.11 crack & face that is Mugu Rocks hardest TR. The light of the setting sun on this day was angled just right so that it bounced off of the semi-gloss paint that is used to mask the rock's graffiti. The resulting reflection is unlike any other that I've seen on sandstone.
Just a few hundred yards up the road from Mugu Rock is a trailhead for the Chumash Trail. One of the oldest continuously-used footpaths on the continent, Chumash Trail climbs steeply up from the coast and leads directly to the top of Mugu Peak. The views of the coast and the Channel Islands are unbelievable.
Marisa Watkins (who not long after became Marisa Fienup) was belaying a friend up Mugu Rock. As I walked across the front of the bolder, Marisa moved in-line with the massive road cut that was made in order to redirect the PCH. During a narrow window of time each year,very near the summer solstice, the sun sets in this giant notch.
This incredible sunset (also shot from atop Mugu Rock) evokes many of the qualities of a painting to me.
This is several minutes after the first self portrait. An incredible moment.<br> <br> (My only regret is that I was shooting with a first-generation digital SLR with poor low-light capability. The full-res file is a little soft and plenty noisy.)
