What if I told you that you never have to see their ticks again?

One bolt is borderline. Two is cheating.

What about FA's? Does a top rope ascent qualify? Back in the day, in the backwoods, back when (that's a lot of "backs", t'isn't it?) bolts were discouraged/frowned upon, and we had lots of trees to set up face climbs with we allowed as to their validity.

I say yes, but any subsequent lead ascent supercedes it when it comes to naming/grading privileges. Much like with an aid line that later goes free. Props to the vision of the person who established it on TR / etriers, but the telos of a climb is free and sharp.

Should you even tick it if you stick-clip more than the first two bolts. If you haven't actually pulled the rope up and clipped it in to the provided fixed protection, which, I will give you this (it's OK), probably has a draw on it, then don't claim you have sent it. Or if you get it clean make it clear you top-roped part or half of it. Top-roping is not leading, and having to hang on long enough to pull rope up and clip makes it harder thus the grade. This is especially true on routes like Yard Boss, Bouldering 101 or Cressent. If you get it clean on TR, bravo! Be proud of that, it's climbing in the purest form. But please don't TR through or nearly through the crux and call it a lead ascent. As far as justifying it for "safety reasons" get a better belayer or TR that section til you can competently lead it. Yes, it might mean you have to work it a few more times which I think most of us realize makes the send all the sweeter.

History note: When top-down route development began, if draws were hanging after bolting the line we would on the FA run, take the draw off, move it down to our harness, clip it back in the the bolt then clip the rope in. Not saying we should do that now but we didn't want to cheat ourselves of the physical experience someone leading it from the ground would have. I also ensured that we and most others could clip a draw to the bolt on lead.

Thanks for telling us all what we can and cannot do on a free website where nobody's getting paid for what we tick or don't tick.

Yes and no. If you're noting the ascent in your personal log/guidebook, then you're only accountable to yourself, who cares?

But in this digital age of advertising our tick list as a sort of CV, it matters a little bit more.

Stick clipping the anchors from the ground counts as a send. Facts.

For context, several years ago the OP posted a comment on a Facebook send video of a local climber on a route called ‘Yard Boss’. The comment read something like “with the third draw clipped you didn’t climb the route. I’d call that Bitch Boss”. My buddies and I thought that was so funny we renamed all of the routes we sent that season per our cheating antics. I believe we climbed ‘Sentanced to Bitch’, ‘The Green Bitcher’, ‘Bitch-Nami’, and ‘Corned Beef and Bitch’ among others.

Keep fighting your battles you stubborn dwarf!

Well... whoever it was obviously climbed it, but did they lead it...?

Love this! If you clip the third bolt of six on a climb... At least you embraced it. Haha. Just remember top-roping is the purest form of climbing.

I mean yes and no.  It's pretty clear from context and the options available in MP for "ticks" that it's used for more than just "sends".  A CV?    We're not applying for jobs as professional climbers.
