Calico Basin Reservation/Fee System. How annoying is it?

Hey guys,

So I just looked into the fee and reservation system they now have in place for getting into Calico Basin, which is a huge bummer. I've only climbed there before they had this system setup.

How much of a pain is it to deal with this reservation system on a constant basis living in Vegas? Does it really limit your access to the Red Rocks climbing in season? Needing a timed reservation seems like it would really create problems when you have long approaches or need to climb around a certain time of day. Are all the slots getting filled up during prime season to where you can't even go out?

Are most people just bypassing this by going to other areas or taking a different approach in to Red Rocks?

Wait, what? There isn't a fee or reservation system for Calico. You mean the scenic loop? It certainly sucks.

What K B said.  Last I heard, it hadn't been implemented for Calico Basin yet.

But the loop road does have the reservation.  Get in before 8AM.

If after, make sure you download the QR code before going to the gate.  Sometimes the Reserve America App doesn't work with no cell connection.

It's stupid.

Ah must have misunderstood.

Looks they haven't done it yet outside of the scenic loop, but will eventually. Good reason to enjoy things over there while I can before they implement it. Thanks.

Calm down Devin, you don't even have to pay for parking unlike at Smith. The rez system is not in effect yet.  If you come here in the busy season the sport crags will be packed. Just like at Smith. Hope all is well Chief

"Beginning October 1, 2022, the Bureau of Land Management requires Timed Reservations for vehicle entry to the Scenic Drive between 8am and 5pm though May 31, 2023." -BLM

Its seasonal. Not in effect in the summer. In effect now.

Ah, see my confusion?  This is a thread about Calico, not the loop.

I see your confusion.
Its difficult to cover all bases and interpretations of statements.

While the original thread question was answered correctly immediately, the 2nd response was already incorrect on specifics of the reservation system for the loop road. At the time of the 2nd post the reservation system for the loop road was inactive, because it was summer. So you could not have made a reservation if you wanted to, at that time, yet it was saying to get there before 8am. At that time that advice was irrelevant. Cole's post on Sept 28th where he says "The rez system is not in effect yet." is implied to mean the reservation system for Calico. It would be easy for someone to misinterpret it to mean the reservation system is not active at all... however, its sooooo close to Oct 1. So, when it was October and the loop road reservation went active again, I posted about it, mostly directed to those few who misinterpreted Cole's post. I did not post about it clearly enough to specify the loop road.

Yeah my bad, I made it much more confusing by conflating the two. I didn't realize that Calico isn't included in the loop. Thanks for the info everyone.

It's more confusing than that. "Calico Hills" with the first and second pullouts is included in the loop. But the other side of the same hills is "Calico Basin", which you asked about specifically, and not included.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
