BLM has closed the scenic loop indefinitely and discouraged me from parking outside RR and hiking in, saying they didn't have the resources for rescue... smh.

What ever happened to the days where you would never depend on a rescue in the first place. Also over 40% of injuries occur inside the home. So it should be everyone's civic duty to go outside and avoid overwhelming the healthcare facilities.

What you say?

Lots of people are just ridiculously bad at judging risk, and I've seen no shortage of people proudly demonstrating a lack of concern for anyone but themselves across multiple social media and online platforms.

You should see the pics from Berthoud Pass too. Reports indicate lots of people trying to backcountry ski for the first time because CO ski areas are closed, despite the likelihood that they will directly injure themselves or someone else.

It's a case of lowest common denominator - the idiots in our midst mandate a public position of "don't climb" so we don't get the untrained gym climber trying to go outdoors because his gym is closed.  Or those two guys on Epi last winter.

For experienced, responsible climbers (e.g. a climber with 1000s of pitches under their belts and no rescues or major injuries), the "don't climb" policy is nearly impossible to justify.  Overall statistic show raw numbers of climbing injuries are eclipsed by injuries from activities perceived to be less risky, like cycling and running.  The current "stay-at-home" order in Nevada expressly allows recreational activities while taking the same precautions one does while in public generally (social distance, don't touch your face, wash your hands, etc).

Of course, there is a camp that advocates total abstinence from all non-critical activities - basically don't leave your house for anything other than food and emergencies.  As with anything else, there is a cost:benefit analysis that must be done and I wonder if the total-abstinence approach flattens the curve any more than following the legal orders with the aforementioned proper precautions.

"raw numbers of climbing injuries are eclipsed by injuries from activities perceived to be less risky, like cycling and running."

Yeah but,  how complicated is the rescue of a jogger?  Versus someone 7 pitches up in vertical terrain.

Check out Calico Basin just outside of Red Rock.
Amazing climbing out there, free entry. Not technically a state park but there are marked trails & tons of routes.
I'm keen to climb if you end up checking it out!

That's the name of the BLM land management unit.

The name of the climbing area is Red Rocks.

Either way ... it's closed.

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area is not closed in its entirety.  The BLM voluntarily abided by the non-essential business closure and pulled its staff and closed the facilities, including the loop road, visitor center, and certain parking areas with restrooms.  The land itself is not closed.

Greg’s guide book is wrong, it’s Red Rock.... not Red Rocks(that’s in Co.).

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
