I've recently seen this term for the first time in an old discussion about redundancy vs equalisation.
Does anyone have a few moments to explain the origin of the name 'banshee belay'?

Probably cause some dude once took an unholy massive screamer on that set up.

I'd guess it's the sound Andy K must've made the first time he whipped with a belayer hanging from one.

Accordingly to Irish mythology, a Banshee is a female spirit who warns a family that one of them will soon die.

So, it seems appropriate - YGD

Also used in the movie Avatar, and here:

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
