Climbing Gym Directory

Why isn't the climbing gym list managed in a similar way to climbing areas with admins and tools for suggesting edits? A number of states seem to be missing new gyms. Link: https://www.mountainproject.com/gyms

If MP does not want to become an ingrown clique of 64-year-olds, its database (and forums) need to go where real climbers are going, and treat indoor gyms and equipment and methods as seriously and carefully as it treats outdoor routes and crags and climbing equipment and methods.

Certainly the goal of raising this issue is to encourage the website to evolve.

It's also unfortunate that CBJ (unrelated) does not keep its gym database/map current - http://www.climbingbusinessjournal.com/directory/map/

Hopefully, we can get some more engagement from MP members and get this across the finish line.

This one has been closed for  nearly ten years:
Vertical World (Bremerton)
5934 State Highway 303 NE.,
Bremerton, Washington 98311

It was "replaced" by this one which is open and operational and needs to be listed:
Island Rock Gym
9437 Coppertop Loop NE, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110(206) 451-4020

This is actually a great idea and could be very useful.  At least in NYC, with the amount of new gyms and how the culture is growing, I can easily see how a better directory would help grow the sport.  Indoor climbing is definitely a bigger part of the future of the sport.

That's for the kick-in-the-pants!  Until now, we had a static and not-very-robust directory (link in the footer) AND gyms sprinkled around the route database as “Areas”.

I've made these changes to the Gym Directory:

  • You can star-rate gyms.
  • You can comment on gyms, using our standard comments system (with flagging, etc).
  • You can submit a page improvement (to update text, tell us the gym closed/moved, etc), which gets handled by REI employees here.
  • Admins can add a description to a gym that doesn’t have one.
  • There is an “Add Missing Gym” button on the state gyms page.
  • “Gyms” has been added to the top site header and removed from the footer.
All the gyms currently in the “Route Guide” will be consolidated to the Gyms Directory.  This will take some time and is not done yet.

In the future, climbing gyms should only be in the Gym Directory, and not added to the Route Guide as "Areas".

I will be updating / fixing the things noted above.  For future fixes / additions / deletions, please use the new tools in the Gym Directory (don't post them here).

Thanks everyone!

Hi Nick,

Is it possible to enhance the listed geographies for Climbing Gyms to something similar to that used by Routes (see photos)? More specifically, to replace the "Canada" category with "International" at some point.

Thanks,
John

The new country listings look great.

Separately, have noticed some States(regions) are showing incorrect names for cities. See image below for Louisiana's listings.

I just tried to add two new gyms to France, using the "Add missing gym" button.
I carefully entered all the data requested.
But neither shows on the list of gyms for France.

Is there some _delay_ in the MP database for indoor gyms?

I've never noticed such a delay for adding new Routes or new Areas or new Photos.

Be nice if we could at least be warned about the delay, just to set expectations.

Yes, needs to be approved by an MP admin. Generally takes a few days (give or take) to be approved.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
