Parts of Zion received nearly 3" of rain last night.

The Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway from Canyon Junction to East Entrance is closed indefinitely due to rock falls and flood damage from the storm last night. No through traffic is allowed and visitors will need to drive around. We will update as conditions change.

Currently, due to rock falls and flood damage, no pedestrians are allowed past the Grotto and all trails north of the Grotto are closed. We will update as we get more information.

Rockfall on Mt. Carmel Highway

There was so much rockfall that the Indians were spooked and wouldn't spend the night in there.

It is a very active area, mass wasting is the norm.

Hey, I have a great idea,.. lets build a paved road and have several million people a year ride through the fall zone.

What could go wrong?

(closing the canyon AFTER the event is sort of locking the barn door after the horse is stolen.)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
