When I climb at the Gunks I don't notice anything getting me but usually the next day my legs will have a bunch of bites that are worse than mosquito bites. I climb in pants, so something is crawling up. What are they and does normal bug spray work for them?

Its very warm there right now. Its not a heat rash is it? The pants part me think of that. Try climbing in pants but wash your legs immediately after climbing and then put on shorts

Drop 'Trouw !

Seriously, The Bugz -CHIGGERS- As I understand it,
are the larvae stage -that you can not see-
of the red dot mite that you can see, tiny reddish just barely visible
They are a microscopic burrowing sac of puss,

teeth on a bubble  attracted to moist areas where skin /clothing meet.
 Soak the of waist band of pants & the tops of a short pair of socks, with  Natrapel,
 Pre-treat all wearable soft goods/cloth with

As hard as this sounds ;
~stand during belays ~
try not to lean up against the cliff, avoid grassy decaying ledges,
don't stand on/@rotten wood
Regularly brush/Dry around waist -top of socks, Keep Dry around anywhere moisture-clinging
 don't stand or sit your damp pack on rotten woody/leafy stuff

Permethrin is an insecticide that works very well against insects and can last on your clothing even through repeated washings. You can also add to your protection by adding an insect repellent such as DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Chiggers go through clothing. A light spray ofdeet keeps them away.

DEET works for chiggers.  If you want to go old school and smell like rotten eggs, flowers of sulfer from the drugstore works too and won't dissolve your watch crystal.  But also, don't sit down in tall grass to belay!  Permethrin is, in my opinion, essential for tick protection and is supposed to kill chiggers too, so would probably work if you have long pants.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
