I think climbers — most, anyway — have always had their specialty. Gill and Sherman bouldering, Croft and Bachar soloing, Moffat and Gullich sport climbing, others pushing free climbing boundaries on big walls. (Everyone dabbled in bouldering, but that was just practice). But people like, say, Todd Skinner, who did everything, were fairly rare. And when I started climbing you were either a traddie or a sport climber: It was a style/ethics/philosophy thing and people were very tribal about it. Seems like nowadays most people who can, do both.
