Higgins was one of the most talented free climbers of his generation. He was the author of incredibly delicate and runout face climbs, led while wearing primitive footwear. I was told that he led the FFA of the Valley's Serenity Crack, using the inside edges of his Kronhofer klettershoes with the toes pointed down. This was before pin scars were chiseled into the thin crack. Today it's a vastly different climb, not to mention easier.
