It looks pretty miserable to me-Highs in the low 50s on Sat. but chance of rain and windy-highs in the 30s on sunday but cloudy and windy, and highs in the 20s on monday.
Does this reflect what weather will actually be like in the park? I have heard that the smith rock microclimate can make things different in the park than what you would think. Are there any places to hide from the rain/wind?
Just don't want to make the long drive there to be miserable all weekend. Thanks for any opinions.
When I lived in Bend, I'd go into the park with both of those forecasts. It's definitely a crapshoot, but based on that it could be okay. I run pretty warm and like being cold, so my idea of good conditions might be different from yours. It also depends on what styles of climbing you want to do. For redpointing I like it just above freezing if it's overcast or low-mid 20s if it's clear and I'm climbing in the sun. (assuming no wind)
i live in bend and im not planning on going with that forecast; I certainly wouldn't drive over from the valley or anything for it. Smith is a tricky place to forecast. I usually just wait for sure-thing good conditions this time of year. 40% chance of rain means its going to rain, and be cloudy and windy when its not. personally, im going to try and squeeze another day or two out of my ski pass.
Climbable? Saturday looks climbable, but miserable with that wind and you might get wet. in any way pleasant for all but the masochistic? doubtful. if you are tolerant of crap weather like max up there, go for it. Sometimes the weather forecast changes within 24 hours, but this time of year, it never seems to be for the better.
