I'd like to take a course on rescue in climbing scenarios where things go south.  Does anyone know of any courses like this in the SF Bay Area?  I'm a graduate student, so I really can't afford to pay a huge amount, but teaching myself can only go so far.

Yosemite Mountaineering School has a "Self-Rescue / Aid Climbing" class for $167.

I helped teach a class like this once.

Mostly we practiced prusiking up a fixed rope, which is one of the more likely scenarios of a self-rescue (stuck rappel rope).

We also taught belay escapes, but these are much less likely to be used.

The best plan is to climb with a solid and careful partner, so you never get into an accident in the first place.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
