Just a thought. Maybe less lowering/dropped climber accidents.

Only in a sense that people would be dropping themselves, and not someone else...

Ya think? In general how many of you learned how to rappel before you belayed? Like with an ATC or 8 device or something?

I learned how to lead belay first and then immediately after on the next climb, I had to learn how to rap as my partner yelled at me from the ground, all with an ATC, but I get the feeling that this is not normal?

Thats part of the point of the post. How many rappelling have dropped themselves?

Totally. Nobody's ever killed themselves or somebody else using a Rubik's cube.

Maybe, but not needing a to coordinate a simurappel is nice too

Oh, totally—I 100% agree with using an ATC for actual rappelling, there are very few cases where simul-rappelling is the better alternative. I don't think that's what OP is advocating though, he's just saying that maybe a good way for people to learn to use a grigri for belaying is to learn its feel on a fixed line rappel. I'm refraining from weighing in on that.

I guess I read your comment as not specific to rappelling, but that you were sayingan ATC is always better than a grigri, which is a position many people seem to hold, and which I definitely don't agree with. If that's not what you meant, though, I apologize for misconstruing your comment!
