Hi,

Looking to find out about any climbing areas close to John Day (within an hour).  Any info would be great!

Thanks!

Burnt river canyon is probably the closest. It's probably a little over an hour from JD. This time of year it'll be very hot and watch out for snakes. If your willing to drive a little further spring mountain is a nice place to spend a warm afternoon!

Oregon is really climbing poor, unfortunately. There are a smattering of what I call "desperation crags" which you'll have to scour local beta for, if not create entirely by yourself. The closest decent crags are Hell's Canyon and Smith. The La Grande area has had a little development.

I do drive through John Day on my way to City of Rocks *shrug*

Were I stuck there I'd probably pick up something else to do like mtbiking or fly fishing.

Not sure if Crack in the Ground is only an hour away but it has some climbing and nonclimbers would find it interesting

I've actually been there and it's kinda pitiful. Both Smith and Trout are closer than that from John Day.

Way more fun hiking thru than climbing for sure!

A little more than an hour, but I Would second Spring Mountain. Cool little crag.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
