Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are these in place and in reasonable condition? And do they go all the way to Mammoth?

As of two weeks ago the ropes were there. Although I'm sure they will never be "official" they will always be there. "Reasonable" is up to you to decide. Dozens of people go up and down them every day. There have been ropes up to Mammoth for the last few years. I have no direct knowledge but I'm sure there is one there now.

I took a ride on a fixed line to Mammoth Terrace a few years back.   While jugging the line the sheath separated and I slid about 10 feet down the line until the sheath bunched up at a knot and stopped.   The sheath was like powder and fell apart in my hands upon inspection.   Fortunately there was another line next to it and I was able to switch and continue.   It got my attention and woke me up good.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
