What does everyone prefer to use as the second rope when a full rope length rappel is necessary? I have seen people use anywhere from 6-8mm static line and some people using a half rope.

Half rope. I never got into the tag line thing- if the rope gets stuck, I can lead on the half rope in a pinch to go get it. Some people swear by it, though.

That said, I'm thinking about getting an 80m, because I hate carrying two ropes....

Why carry a second rope on your back when you can use it to your advantage while leading?  Use double ropes.

120 meter single rope.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
