What do you guys think - the fit everywhere else is great - is this going to hinder me with crampons and/or snowshoes or should I just use them and not worry about the extra fabric at the hem?

I second hemming them. It takes about 5 minutes by hand. 30 seconds with a machine

If they have zippers around the ankle area it might not be as easy as just hemming them yourself. Still do-able, but you'd have to remove, shorten, and resew the zipper. A seamstress or tailor should be able to do it easy, though. Probably wouldn't cost too much.

just fold the fabric above the zipper and sew, if its a three quarter/full length zipper i would take in the fabric around the ankle so it bunches up around the knee instead of around the ankle.

Here's a list of possible solutions; - Cut them off and let them fray.
- Cut them off and heat weld them.
- Turn them up and Duct tape them.
- Turn them up and safety pin them.
- Trade them to someone taller than you whose pants are too short.
- Sell them to someone taller than you and buy the right size pants.

I have a pair of full zip pants, also way too long, or I'm way too short, take your pick. By the time I've got serious footwear on, they aren't a problem, as they'll stay on my ankles. If you would also want to wear gaiters, that's a problem. If they can slide down under the heel, that's a problem. If you can find a good seamstress (can we say that these days?), no problem. Best, OLH

They are full zip and I imagine a hem job would be expensive because of this. I do want to wear them with gaiters (OR crocodile) which I assume could also complicate things..... Anybody know a good tailor in the LA area for technical fabrics?

I'm not seeing why gaiters would be a problem. If it's just that they bunch up too much, you can concentrate all of the bunching under the gaiters which will hold everything in and keep the pants from sliding down over your heel. No?

Anybody know a good tailor in the LA area for technical fabrics? 3" doesn't seem like a huge amount. Have you tried them with the gaiters? That might spread out the extra nicely. Mine are huge, but still behave well enough. For me, they don't have to be super great, just get through some snowy hiking or hideously crappy winter weather commuting. Here, I'd be asking a great local company that sews bags and such, but I expect LA should have a number of options. Good luck on it! OLH
