Different way to attach belay device

I was recently at a camp where rappelling and ascending were being taught.  I noticed a few people had a short runner girth-hitched to their harness and then the belay device was attached to the runner making it farther away than usual.  Anybody familiar with this? Advantages? Thanks!

Extending your belay device gets it farther away from a backup, if you use one.

Whole threads on it. Look for "backing up a rappel", should get you loads.

Personally, my preference is to extend the device and use a prusik backup. I'm ridiculously short, and this gets everything out of range of being sucked into the ATC.
