Feature request: Grade ranges

When adding a new climb, it is currently possible to give slash grades, such as 5.10c/d or V4-5. There are a number of cases where it would be helpful to permit a wider range, such as 5.10-5.11 or V3-V5. Some examples:

  • There may exist easier beta than what was used on the first ascent
  • The climb may be outside the preferred style of the submitter, such as a compression boulderer submitting an offwidth crack
  • The first ascensionist has an unusual body type that may be highly favorable to this particular climb
  • The route is an open project

If such a system were implemented, there are two natural questions that would need to be answered:

  • How many grade votes would be required to remove the range and assign a single grade?
  • When calculating the average of all grade votes, what effect should the original grade range have (if any)? For example, if a climb is submitted as V3-V5, and the consensus grade is V3+, should the original grade range be counted as a vote for V4, or just ignored altogether?

Thoughts?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
