Hey All,

Heading to Toulomne mid to late July for a week and was hoping to camp at Toulomne Meadows campgroup but the NPS isn't taking reservations until August 1st this year, due to heavier than normal snowfall, so we're looking for alternatives. We're coming in from Reno so something east of Toulomne would be ideal. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

There are several campgrounds just east of the Tuolumne entrance station off of Tioga Road. These are USFS campgrounds. They are quite close to Tuolumne. This one in particular doesn't take reservations.  Look on for campgrounds and reservation availability:

Despite coming in from Reno, if you're going to be there a week, you might find the NPS campgrounds to the west of the Meadows a better option. Specifically Porcupine Flat, Yosemite Creek, and, especially, White Wolf. Commute would be similar but you'll be inside the park, so no dealing with the entrance kiosk each day, and, compared to the CG in the link above, saving 1300' of elevation gain/loss each day. The road up Lee Vining Canyon is steep and if you get caught behind an RV,,,,,,

There are other CGs on east side of the Meadows - eg: Ellery Lake - but those are pretty much right on the road, somewhat barren, and often very windy. I'm not sure about the Saddlebag Lake CG..

Half of the Tuolumne Campground is first come, first served.  Get there early and you'll get a spot.

The OP is going in July. The TM CG doesn't open this year until August 1.

There's a commercial campground at the North end of Lee Vining that is ok. Pretty sterile, but has showers and is a good base if you're looking for in town creature comforts. There's a little motel right near there, or at least there was 5 years ago or so

Thanks for the correction, Marc. I missed the date.

Keep in mind that they still could open before Aug 1 depending on actual rate of snow melt. If they do, not sure whether any could be reserved or any/all would be available by first come first serve.

So if you are committed to Tuolumne before Aug 1, periodically check on current TM campground opening date?
