Three things every climber should feel...

Hmm, so I read the MP article with the same title. I am very curious to see other climbers' response, their age, and how long they have been climbing. I have a theory about this...

What 3 words would you use to describe what you think every climber should feel (whether it be at least once or every time they go out).

I'll start:
Age: 41
Years Climbing: 28
3 words - Anxiety, Horror, Relief.

Nobody can tell me what I should feel.

Maybe climbing is my religion. Maybe it's a response to repressed feelings of inadequacy. Maybe it's a "Type A" drive to conquer something. Maybe it's my competitive drive to crush the spirits of those around me, or make them feel bad in the face of my excellence.

Or then, maybe not...

You missed the point. Read the OP again, this is not you telling everyone how you feel, but your chance to tell everyone else how they should feel.

Don't think I can lump "what you should feel every time" with "just once." I love pushing myself and getting scared, but can't handle that type of climbing all the time.

The op seems to be trying to tell people how to feel.. not down with that at all. i will share how i feel.
creeping up on 55. climbing for 35...

it all changes day to day, hour to hour, min to min, second to second... Some of the things I feel are ...Calm, peace, urgency, fear, relief, camradery, loneliness, achievement, humiliation, sucessfull, total failure.... mostly just like being outside in the mountains and up high on a cliff... Lots of places I find myself top belaying rather than lowering off and hanging at the bottom of the cliff in the social scean....

How about just one word.

Appreciation, for nature, your surroundings, good friends, your safety, and the opportunity to enjoy it all.

My dad used to always say at the end of every outing, fishing, hunting, dirtbiking whatever....."Well, the Lord smiled on us today."

Was there an article or just a video? Cause I'm not wasting my time watching a video.

nick/gunkiemike:

i definitely didn't mean it in that sort of way. definitely. (sorry if it reads like that). think of it more like, what are the most important (to you at least) things that you have felt climbing.

if i were to list another 3 that i thought of they would be:

engaged , humility, tired.

I believe I read it correctly. "How THEY SHOULD feel". Not "How you feel" or "how you would like to feel." I object to the presumption implied by the word "should". I don't tell others how they should feel. My examples were chosen to show that my experience might be TOTALLY different than others', and that therefore any projection they may have vis-a-vis THEIR experience to ME would be totally inappropriate.
