Water ice climbing in cali done for the season, or not?

Went out to Tokopah falls this past weekend and witnessed a couple avalanches and ice blocks falling off the rock in what felt like 50 degree weather... definitely not climbable conditions for me.

Tons of snow still but it seems like we are catching up with the rest of the country and getting into spring.

I wonder, while lee Vining and Tokopah and Boy Scout falls are in the 40s and upwards this week, is there anyplace that's going to have the temps for stable ice climbing in the state? Is the season over for Cali'?

(Don't be fooled by the frozen stuff in this photo, there were streams of water pouring through the ice.)

C Brooks.... its not a day. Its one mile to the end of the trail.

and yes.... its hard to be a Ice climber in California.

Yes, the mission wasn't a total write-off... nice area, short walk, and one can visit the general sherman tree on the way home.

Ski touring the giant forest is pretty rad.

Two of my Friends just returned from Lee Vining.... last thursday.

They reported that conditions were "perfect" .... everything was "in" and thick.

And this spring- summer will be great for Alpine Ice.

Did you climb it yesterday or was it too rotted out? Hard to tell from the picture, but it looks relatively thick to the left.

  1. Deep in the central Sierra last weekend. Covered in a dusting of snow

Where is that?

Also, is Lee Vining still in?

I was at lee vining 2 weekends ago and it was in the early stages of rotting out. A fair amount of ice fall late in the day. Still very climbable though. I haven't been watching the weather, but if it's been warm, then it's likely no good anymore.
