On the Go

I have been blessed to turn my love of hiking/backpacking into a means of making some money for my family as well. This means I do a lot of travel to explore and backpack/hike in various locations and then I write about/photograph/video the experience and upload it to the sites I write for. Because I travel so much, I frequently find myself in situations where I am working on the go which means I can only access public internet which I know is not secure. I don't know if I am paranoid or not, but I am really concerned about the privacy of my information/work/pictures and want to know if there are any measure I can take to protect information/devices from being tapped into when using public wi-fi?I have heard of vpns but I am having a hard time figuring out the difference between free ones like these bestvpn.com/free-vpns/ and paid ones like these securethoughts.com/3-best-v.... Any input would help.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
