Hi everyone, I will be in Hanoi for a few weeks and hope to climb outdoors when I can anytime between March 20 and mid April. I don't have rope or draws on me but have shoes, harness, Grigri, cleaning gear. Not sure which grading system they use there but in Thailand, I have been climbing 6a-b (5.10a-c) on lead, higher on TR. I can safely belay you up to 160lb/70kg as I am pretty small (105lb). I heard the walls are in the same area so it should be easy to be belay partners at any level.

Personally, if I'm on Cat Ba Island I'd be doing deep water soloing instead of any roped stuff. When I was there a few years back, the "Unemployment Wall" was my favorite.

it looks fun, but as a very poor swimmer (almost non-swimmer), this isn't an option for me..

Butterfly valley (on Cat Ba) has plenty of great climbing at any grade, for your length of stay. Asia Outdoors can rent you gear, a motorbike for the day and access. March is iffy for DWS there, and it is always tide dependent, so find out from A.O what they will be like for your dates.

Also there are newer crags developed on the island, and a brand new guidebook many years in the making.

Miss it there, jealous!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
