I stumbled on the story of Isaac Stoner and Dan Futrell, 2 ordinary guys from Boston, who headed down to Bolivia and found the flight recorder (black box) for Eastern Air 980 on Mount Illimani. It's an amazing story and written up over on Outside magazine. https://www.outsideonline.com/2126426/what-happened-eastern-airlines-flight-980
Here's the original thread they started on Reddit about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/4miqv4/two_guys_from_boston_set_off_on_an_expedition_to/
They also recently did an AMA over on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/58aaa6/back_in_june_two_guys_from_boston_found_a_missing/
Here's the WH.org petition from their thread to try and get the Bolivian government to allow the NTSB to analyze the flight recorder: https://wh.gov/iMwrv
As a climbing/mountaineering community it would be great if we could move the needle on this petition and try to help close the last chapter for both the families of those who died in the crash and also to validate the effort these guys put in by going all the way down there on their own dime to find it.
