Coat shopping

Hey y'all! I need some help.
My wife and I are moving to central Massachusetts in January... Dead. Cold. Winter and I'm shopping for coats for us. I need something that will be versatile, warm and waterproof for the snow and rain. We'll be using them in the city as well as on climbing and hiking trips. I'm willing to pay a couple bones for each coat. I've looked at the North Face TriClimate coats but the thermoball jacket underneath has received bad reviews.
Can anyone offer some suggestions?

It is never a good idea to wear your dirty stinking climbing jacket around town.

Get a nice comfortable jacket for town and a less comfortable more hard wearing jacket for climbing.

But if you insist, Macpac are making some pretty good Jackets these days.…

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
