Bad climbing movies

I watched Cliffhanger on cable TV yesterday. I had forgotten what a horrendous movie it was (other than some great scenery). I especially like the cave scenes where they are attacked by bats and where Stallone gets the crap beaten out of him but then picks his attacker up and impales him of a stalactite on the cave roof. Classic!

What's your vote for worst climbing movie ever?

The opening scene in Cliffhanger gave me chills, even though it was contrived. Why the heck were they doing a tyrolean to a helicopter anyway? The remainder of the movie makes me laugh and cringe at different points. Truly bad

However, Into Thin Air might be even worse (great book- horrible film), since it doesn't even make you laugh like Cliffhanger.

Vertical Limit was also pretty bad...

Everest was a bit of a shocker. Had to watch it as my family was friends with some of the New Zealand guides. Rob Hall and Andy Harris.

It didn't depict the scene about when the American guides left their clients for dead very well.

That scene from Vertical Limits is one the of best. "Yeah, I'm gonna cut you off the rope and be cool with that for the rest of my life."

Not to mention the other 100 things in that scene.

Great stuff!

No one has mentioned The Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood? He totally solos a 5.14 OW in the desert for Eiger training. Gnar.

I thought Eiger Sanction was great. Maybe one of my favorite movies.

Yeah, I really like Eiger Sanction. It's intended as a spoof of spy movies and not meant to be taken too seriously but at least the climbing is relatively realistic.
I love the scene where they climb the desert tower and Clint has a six pack in his backpack.

Guys in my high school used to cut their father's loose cliff side all the time...no big deal.

Most movies with climbing are really bad.

Really bad.

However Eiger sanction had real footage of stunt climbers climbing in the desert
and on the eiger. I think a stunt climber was killed by rockfall during the filming on the eiger.

Sad story.

So take the small dose of reality and enjoy it.
Most movies are nonsense anyway.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
