I live near Tacoma, travel to Seattle often. I am looking for a great gear shop, locally owned. Im a total gear whore, mostly rock climbing and I spend often at REI and backcountry, but also want to support local whenever possible. Where am I headed in your opinions. Add Portland as well if worth a pit stop while passing through.

Thanks

Feathered Friends.

It's right across the street from the REI flagship store.

Feathered Friends in Seattle. There also used to be (still is?) a place up in the U District near Ravenna.

EDIT: The place in the U District is Pro Mountain Sports. Guy there was super cool.

Second Pro Mountain and Feathered Friends. Also add Second Ascent to the list. All good people.

The Mountain Shop in Portland has been around since '37, supposedly it's the oldest independent sporting goods store in the US (or something like that). Good people and pretty good climbing inventory, as far as retail shops go. They sell some local stuff too (NW Alpine, Cilo, etc.).

There is also OMC and Climb Max, but I don't have any personal experience with them.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
