Darrington - climbs to beat the heat

Hi, does anyone know which areas receive the most shade? We've backed off of Dreamer before due to the blistering heat, so we're wondering if the Blueberry Route on Exfoliation Dome would be cooler since it's west facing. Also curious about Illusion Wall on Squire Creek.

Yes, rare is the Darrington climber that has NOT been cooked on Dreamer after ignoring a warm forecast. Forget the tape, bring the oven mitts!

Heat-up scenario is a function of which direction the crag faces.

- Green Giant is worst because it faces SE so gets morning sun that stays until late afternoon.

- Most Exfo routes face W, so are nice and shady until mid-day, then it cooks. A great option with an early start.

- Illusion faces east, so better late in the day.

- Probably the coolest spot is North buttress of 3 O'Clock Rock - Total Soul, Silent Running etc. Faces NE so shady late in the day.

Despite all that, when the forecast in Darrington (town) is much above 80, I head to WA Pass, which is 3,000' higher.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
