Forearm / hand spasm when tired

I've been climbing for many years but this year have spent more time in the gym than ever before. The gym I'm at is almost 100% lead and quite steep! I find I've been getting pumped quickly but the pump is not my issue.

3 times in the last 6 months, when I am quite tired near the end of a session I have experienced some sort of forearm spasm. Usually it is on the first difficult series of moves after an extended break. At first I thought it was a cramp but I have realized it is really a spasm of my forearm muscles. The muscles spasm so that my fingers pull in to make a fist. I have to fight to keep the hand open and grab another hold. It usually goes away with a rest and shake.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem or know what I can do to avoid a future incident?

Could be an electrolyte imbalance? Hydration issue? I think it's pretty common, happens to me on sustained tight hand cracks and often at the end of a long day I know of others that experience it too.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
