In 2014 I sent Doug Tompkins an email. I never expected him to respond - but he did. The words he sent me were more inspiring than I could have imagined. He was a great man, and I am sorry he has gone.

I am copy-pasting some of those words here, in hopes that anyone reading this will find it inspirational. I also wrote a blog post about Doug's email, and what it meant to me (please, no hate. just click the link or don't.) here

"...with determination, perseverance, high energy, good ideas and lots of hard work you may find yourself getting what it is you want to do done... It is always this way in these things. The campaign against Endesa which was a marvelous coalition of some 60 organizations (some of course more involved than others), won an epic victory over the Goliath of Endesa/ENEL that no one thought could be done. So good things happen when enough good people put their minds to it. I wish you all the best of luck.
Remember too , that the environmental movement is unstoppable. If you look back and see where the modern environmental movement began (circa 1960) and where it is today, it has been a non stop continual exponential growth. There is no sign in any sector that this growth is stopping or receding ...meanwhile there is nothing more righteous than to get up each morning and work with spirited people to put the friction on bad development."

I share Doug's optimism, not just in the environmental movement, but in nearly all worldwide trends. Progress is everywhere, but requires a lot of hard work from many people.

Perhaps like many people, I didn't know anything about Doug Tompkins until he died. Thanks Chris for posting his message.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
